Garden Ponds started in 1996 as a nursery that opened for aquatic plant sales – available only on the weekends. It was a backyard hobby that – upon the encouragement of owner Ken Bernard’s wife Jan – turned into a full-time nursery business. It was an obvious direction to go, having water lily propagation taking over their backyard, Jan and Ken started Garden Ponds.
With the love of water lilies at the heart of it – Garden Ponds helped make the peaceful and rewarding hobby of water gardening accessible to countless Kauai residents. Now, 27 years later, they are choosing to close on Sundays. Beginning in August, normal hours at the nursery will continue from Wednesday to Friday 12-5, and Saturdays 10-5. Sundays will remain as a day available for appointments.

When it comes to plants, we have something for everyone. From Asian to north American carnivorous plants to a selection of 52 water lilies, we can help you find the ideal plants for your location. After 27 years of cultivating and growing water plants in the sub-tropical climate of The Hawaiian Islands, we can offer sound advice on how to set up a balanced aquatic ecosystem, and the decorative plants that will work best for the area you are looking to enhance. A self-sustaining, water garden ecosystem has a big impact on emitting peace and balance. A blooming water lily experience will…speak for itself.
New shipment arriving early September
Garden accents are another one of our specialties. We import beautiful hand-carved stone statues, ceramic pots, copper rain chains and paros stone vessels that add another layer of appeal to your garden space. Our shipment of merchandise including a healthy restock or our paros stone vessels, and one-of-a-kind hand-carved stone statues is something we are always excited to share with our customers. Stay tuned for our official container announcement, scheduled to arrive in early September. In the meantime, we are clearing space and making room for our incoming merchandise.
Garden Ponds Online Auction
In order to make room for the new shipment, Garden Ponds will be auctioning off our extra merchandise, including ceramic pots, statues, landscaping materials, fountains, parts, and farm/landscaping equipment. The catalogue will be available for viewing online on August 4th and the auction will occur on August 14th starting at 7:00 pm. The Mo’o Photo Contest Winner
We love a good photo contest! It was a tough choice, but we narrowed it down to one photo that really captured our hearts. Shown here is a Gold Dust Day Gecko native to Madagascar enjoying the nectar of a carnivorous Asian pitcher plant nepenthes gracillis at our nursery in Kilauea. Congratulations to the photographer, Kim Wertheimer, who visited the nursery in June and captured this endearing photo! A big mahalo to all the sweet entries. Next year’s photo contest will be of a water lily– so keep capturing the beauty!
International Water Lily Symposium in Vancouver, BC, Canada
